Thirty-one more days left in the legislative session.
On Tuesday, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee received testimony on HB 2255, relating to infant hearing screening. The bill was left pending in committee.
The Conference Committee on HB 1 met on Tuesday in an organizational meeting. The two chairs (Senator Nelson and Representative Zerwas) assigned legislators from their respective chamber to Articles of the budget bill. Senator Taylor and Representative Greg Bonnen were assigned Article III – Education.
During the Senate Education Committee hearing on Thursday, Senator Taylor unveiled his school finance reform bill. The substitute to HB 3, which includes language from his SB 4, includes a $5,000 across-the-board salary increase for teachers and librarians and increases special education funding. Senator Taylor indicated he hopes to hold a vote on HB 3 as substituted next week.
The Senate Nominations Committee are planning to meet on May 2nd to consider pending nominees in a formal meeting.
The House Public Education Committee are considering Senate bills next Tuesday. One of those bills being considered is Senator Zaffirini’s SB 54, relating to accountability performance of students participating in a regional day school program for the deaf.
