This past weekend, approximately 300 individuals from across the state attended the annual Family Weekend Retreat at the Texas School for the Deaf.
Hosted by the Educational Resources Center on Deafness (ERCOD), the event is an opportunity for families of Deaf or hard-of-hearing children to network and learn from others’ experiences.
Attendees were exposed to awareness and education from Deaf professionals and others who engage daily within the Deaf community and Deaf education.j
Mental health is important in today’s society, and parents were able to participate in workshops that focused on emotional and linguistic development, social and emotional health, and identity and development of self-image.
A workshop also explored the importance of human connection and communications with Deafblind students.
ASL Nook creator Sheena McFeely provided a couple of ASL classes for new and advanced learners.
These workshops provided to parents resources and important information that may be beneficial to their children.
